It is with great sadness that we must inform you that our beloved Mr. Bell has passed away. He passed in the comfort of his home.

I met Bert in 1985 when my girls joined the Freeport Aquatics Club. Only one of them survived swimming, and Bert…. Stacey. He was a coach and mentor for my daughter all her life. She became a Coach following in his footsteps.

He was a larger-than-life figure; he had a loud bark on the pool deck but inspired every one of his kids and encouraged them to perform beyond belief.  I am proud to say that Bert coached more Olympic swimmers than any other coach in this country.

Bert Bell was a long-time head coach of Freeport Aquatics Club, his dedication to Bahamas Swimming and passion for giving children the opportunity to learn how to swim will not be forgotten.

When the Conchman Triathlon first started I was a participant, however Bert soon roped me into helping with the organization of the event. Bert, Donna Long, Joe Thompson, my wife and several others were the backbone of the race. We spent countless years ensuring that race is the internationally recognized triathlon that it is today. He paid special attention to international triathletes, taking them for rides and tours, making sure they had a great experience.

Over the years Bert became a friend and important person in my life. We had numerous arguments and no matter how long the debate I never won; Bert was always right. It amazed me how he knew so much about so many different things. No task was too small, and no goal was too big. His drive could move mountains and his dedication could fill oceans. He will be remembered as a corner stone of sports in the Bahamas and a mentor in the lives of many. He could always be counted on to show up, no excuses, he was always there.

I did not for a minute expect Bert to be gone. I am not sure what we will do at the next swim meet, triathlon or marathon without his guidance, direction, and let us face it yelling at us to get it right. He was a giant of a man and his passing will leave a huge hole in this community.

Thank you, Bert Bell, for years of service!
